Gentle Wind

Welcome to Limitless
—————

“Maami, I’m serious. I saw someone like daddy pass through the shop”, I said.
My mum turned abruptly, “ehn? You this girl. It’s only you that is always seeing. Better continue cleaning that place for me. Daddy ko, mummy ni.”

I shook my head and turned back to the shelves I was cleaning. I fell into my chair like a log of wood when I was done. Cleaning my mum’s shop is not for the faint-hearted.

‘Gbassss’. This door is closing for the third time for cry not loud. It should just stay in one place and stop annoying me. Mtchw. What kind of breeze is this? I opened it again and sat back in my chair. I laid my head on the table in front of me, letting my droopy eyes lead me to the beautiful land of sleep.

I felt someone someone shake me awake.
“My baby, wake up”, said the most loving voice. I jolted awake as soon as I heard. I smiled and screamed with delight, but no sound came out. I could feel my heart bursting with joy.

He smiled too with a well of tears in his eyes. He looked ever young and warm. “Asake miiii, you’ve grown so much. You look so much like your mother now. Make sure you take care of her okay?”, he said with his soft voice.

“Ah, yes. Let me call mummy, she went to the toilet. Mummy!!!”, I shouted while shuffling and getting up.

“Hmm, omo miii. Don’t bother. It’s time for me to be going jare. I would see your mum later”, he said and got up too. I shivered as I felt a cool breeze hit me. Goodness.

“Then, he pulled me into his signature bear hug”, I didn’t realize how much I missed it till then.  I inhaled his scent. He smelled so surreal, something out of this world that I couldn’t place my finger on. He released me and smiled revealing his sparkling white teeth. Then, he closed his eyes and smiled widely, like he used to, whenever he wanted to say bye.

“I never got to say bye properly”, he said.

“Asakeee!” My mum called out. My eyes flew open when I heard her voice.
“Maami?”, I whispered.
“Why were you smiling so much in your sleep?” She said with a hint of tease in her voice.

“I saw daddy again”, I said, with a sad smile.
